What I’m Not Doing This Holiday Season (And Why You Shouldn’t Either)
Every year around this time, the world goes absolutely feral.
Suddenly we’re all expected to:
host gatherings
cook feasts
buy gifts
wrap gifts
decorate homes
keep it together
and smile like we’re in a Hallmark movie.
Meanwhile, half of us are just trying to remember where we put the scissors.
If the holidays make you feel overwhelmed, overstretched, or one gingerbread cookie away from snapping… you’re not alone.
This year, I decided I’m done with the chaos.
Done with the pressure.
Done with pretending I’m superhuman.
So instead of a to-do list, I made a NOT-do list.
And Sis… it’s glorious.
Here are the things I’m absolutely, unapologetically not doing this holiday season — and why you might want to join me.
1. I’m Not Overcommitting Myself
If it’s not a full-body YES,
it’s a full-body NOPE.
No more “Sure, I can make 200 cookies.”
No more “Yeah, I can be at four events in one day.”
No more bending myself like a pretzel for everyone else’s schedule.
Peace is priceless.
2. I’m Not Buying Gifts Out of Guilt
If I don’t talk to you,
text you,
or even remember your last name without checking Facebook…
you’re not getting a gift.
Love and kindness? Yes.
My bank account? No.
3. I’m Not Hosting Out of Obligation
If hosting drains my spirit more than it fills it,
the door stays closed
and the sweatpants stay on.
You can love people deeply…
from your couch.
4. I’m Not Pretending Everything Is “Fine”
The holidays bring up feelings.
Memories.
Loss.
Pressure.
Exhaustion.
So no, I’m not faking the “holiday cheer” for Instagram.
Real > perfect.
Always.
5. I’m Not Waiting Until January to Take Care of Myself
This one’s the sneaky one.
The one we ALL fall into.
“I’ll start after the holidays.”
“I’ll get back on track next year.”
“I’ll focus on me when things slow down.”
Sis… things DON’T slow down.
You slow down.
By choice.
By clarity.
By boundaries.
And that’s exactly why I’m not waiting.
I’m taking care of myself now.
Becky's final thoughts . . . .
